MIMETE Srl proudly announces the newest powders from the iron-base family: standard Duplex MARS F51 and Super-duplex MARS F53.
During the first months of its activity, MIMETE focused on the production of standard grades powders (here) together with a little bit of experimentation on customized alloys.
In particular, MIMETE investigated which alloys could guarantee the easiest entrance in the additive manufacturing market of companies in highly demanding industries such as oil & gas, power generation and aerospace. This led to the production of some special alloys namely F51, together with special high carbon steels and Ni-base alloys typical of investment casting. All these materials were produced in different sizes, dedicated to every different additive processes (BJ, PBF/SLM and DED), but also coating and HIPping.
Duplex steel F51 is a widely used grade, where the relatively high content of Cr, Mo and Ni generates better performing mechanical properties when compared to austenitic stainless steel. Indeed, it has very good pitting corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking resistance. While, F53 is a highly alloyed duplex steel, so called “super-duplex”, distinguished by its much higher corrosion resistance, which makes it the best choice for highly critical atmospheres and environments. Duplex and super-duplex mechanical properties are well known to the oil & gas and maritime industries, which has taken advantage of them for a long time.
These industries look at additive manufacturing with deep interest. This is because it could lead to lower operating costs by streamlining production processes and developing a lean supply chain (for instance, in loco repairing). However, the strong call to components’ qualification and process certifications make the adoption process slower and even more challenging than in other sectors.
Andrea Tarabiono – MIMETE’s Manufacturing Director – says: “MIMETE’s team effort and dedication are bringing our duplex and super duplex stainless steel powder to the market. We are proud to provide our customers high quality powders that will be used in applications where maximum performance is required. We believe that the opportunity to offer metal alloy powders with which customers are used to working should make the introduction of additive manufacturing easier in highly demanding industries. Clearly, it is just the beginning of a long journey towards development. The call is: we all have to look beyond”.
